# Ranks & Permissions

> How ranks, department roles, and permissions decide what each member can do in your department.

***

## How Permissions Work

Every member has one rank and can hold any number of department roles. A member's permissions are their rank's permissions plus those of every role they hold. Roles can only add permissions, never take them away.

You set permissions when you create or edit a [rank](/Department/roster/ranks) or [role](/Department/roster#roles). Roles linked to a Discord role are given and removed automatically, so permissions can change when Discord roles do.

***

## Rank Hierarchy

Ranks are ordered from highest to lowest on the [Roster](/Department/roster). Even with the right permission, you can only:

* Promote, demote, punish, drag, or change roles of members ranked below you.
* Move members into ranks below your own. Administrators can drag members into any rank.
* Edit, delete, and reorder ranks below your own (Administrators only).
* Pick ranks below yours in rank pickers, such as shout visibility and quota ranks.

<Tip>
  If you're in the highest rank, only a super administrator can act on you. Ask an owner or administrator of your main server if something needs changing at the top.
</Tip>

***

## Administrators

The Administrator permission grants everything in the department, including **Settings**, **Audit Logs**, and managing ranks and roles. Administrators are still limited by the rank hierarchy.

### Super Administrators

Super administrators have full control of the department and can act on every member and rank, whatever their own rank. Someone is a super administrator if, on your main Melonly server, they're the owner, have the Administrator permission, or have the Departments dashboard permission.

If a super administrator opens a department they aren't in, they're added to the bottom rank automatically.

### Melonly Support

Melonly support staff can be added to help you. They can see everything an administrator can, but read-only, and have a support badge on the Roster. Remove them once you no longer need help.

    * Your CAD permissions combine your ranks and roles across every department on the server.
    * Department Administrators and super administrators get every panel permission for their department's type, plus Law Panel and Radio. They don't get CAD Admin automatically.
    * The owner and Administrators of your main server get every CAD permission.
    * If your CAD doesn't restrict the Civilian panel, everyone gets the Civilian Panel permissions.

## Changing Department Type

Your department type, set in [General Settings](/Department/settings#department-settings), decides which CAD panel permissions appear when editing ranks. For example, Law Enforcement shows Police Panel permissions.

<Warning>
  Changing the department type removes panel permissions that don't match the new type from every rank. Edit your ranks afterwards to grant the new ones.
