# Joining a Department

> How members join a department with a join link or code, and how requests and auto-join work.

***

## How to Join

Ask a department administrator for the join link or join code. Administrators find both in [General Settings → Join Code](/Department/settings#join-code).

* Join link: open the `melon.ly/join/...` link, sign in if asked, and click **Join department**.
* Join code: on your dashboard, click **Join**, enter the code and submit it.

Pending requests are listed under **Join Requests** on your dashboard, where you can also cancel them.

***

## What Happens When You Join

| Department setup | Result |
| - | - |
| Default | A membership request is sent. Someone with Manage Members reviews it on the [roster](/Department/roster#review-membership-requests). |
| You hold a rank's linked Discord role | You join straight away at the highest matching rank. Needs a linked department Discord server. |
| Required Discord Roles are set on the join code | If you have the roles, you join straight away at the lowest rank. If you don't, you can't join. |

When a request is accepted, the member gets the highest rank whose linked Discord role they hold, or the lowest rank if they have none.

***

## Auto-join by Linked Role

Members are also added automatically when they're given a rank's linked Discord role in the department's Discord server. No join code is needed. Link roles to ranks on the [Roster](/Department/roster#roles).

<Tip>
To stop an old join link from working, regenerate the join code in [Join Code](/Department/settings#join-code). The old code stops working straight away.
